Do you need a website ?
Websites for small businesses
If you are to be found by the general public then you either
need to be in a niche business or specific location to narrow down the search,
or alternatively be prepared to pay a high price to promote your site. So
for instance if you are selling DVD players where you are competing against
the big players you'll need to have a sizeable budget, whereas if you are
selling Japanese Kimonos it will be a lot easier. Similarly geographic location
can put you on the web map. The key phrase 'Family hotel' won't get you
found, but 'Family hotel Little Ilverston' should do the trick.
Websites for wholesale companies
The most common in this group are retailers, who are generally
visited by representatives and don't always search the web. If you are building
a website for this group make sure you make it clear you are not competing
with them by offering an online service to the public. Your website can
be a useful ploy to get extra trade. You can offer them a link to their
website, possibly their own page. This way you can redirect the general
public to their local retailer, giving both you and your client extra business.
If your site is highly ranked, you have even more to offer, and cangain
an advantage over your competitors.
